Later, at the park, Elio sat on a bench looking down at the ground. He had been born on that soil, he thought. Yet, he felt out of place and waited for Bauta to reabsorb him somehow. He was too much of a coward to defend what was rightfully his: a sense of belonging to the place where he was born. When they’d marched on his house, they’d taken that away from him. He was being torn apart by opposing sides, by divided allegiances: there was Maria, insisting again that they leave, and then his loyalties and fears insisting that he stay. He wished, more than anything, that he could reconcile the two sides—somewhere in between would be the perfect landing.

As a produce truck doubling as a bus passed, Elio held his breath until its exhaust spread out into the air, then dissipated. A line of people across the street moved or seemed to move quickly—more so than usual. He remained there for hours, until the last person disappeared from view. Then he got up.

Walking home, he summed up the last days into something comprehensible. He concluded that anything could and would happen in a day, if only he, Elio Perez, could see in it all a glimmer of possibility.
